First Grass

Do you remember? Age 1 or 18? The chickie girls had their first this morning. Such emotion! Their first guaranteed reaction was Sqwaaaak! What is this stuff? Help, an unknown intruder! Then Ms. B. Rock, the brave mother-type of the foursome, pecked at one of the pieces of grass, or was it a snake? or a worm? or…? It did not fight back. The other girls moved out from behind her to take a closer look. After much maneuvering for position, Heckie pecked at another piece of that intruding grass. Hmmm? Seems like nothing to fear. Then the dance began, joined by Henny and Arriauna. Round and round, back and forth, pecking at and running from, (sing it!) ‘Up to the grass, back to the wall, all join wings and circle wide, grab your partner and do-si-do.’ Toys-R-Us and Santa Claus have never brought as much first time joy! After about an hour, another peek finds all four chickie girls contentedly resting on their roost, looking out the window onto the world of grass.

My neighbor just installed the fake stuff, yep artificial turf, throughout her back garden. Weird huh?. . . actually, I thought so to until I actually went and played chase on it today.. .Not a bad option I'd say. . .
uh. Not sure what happens with that stuff though the first time their baby poops on it. On second thought, you'd better stay with the real stuff.

Plastic grass would make for some sick chickies. I don't want to think about their poop!! We'll stick with the real stuff.

D: You must have had an hour of pure delight watching the ladies explore the grass. You described it so well I feel like I was there. Contented girls resting tonight. Ik/PR stewing.

Must be something like going barefoot in the grass for the first time in spring. Wheeeeee! Adorable!

Kay would be the one to know about frolicking barefoot in the new Spring grass! Adorable, both the chickies and Kay.

As to DeAnne's comment--"we'll stick with the real stuff"---so the real stuff doesn't stick!!!(meaning the poop).

Great Blog, De! Wish I was there to meet your chickies. This is the next best thing!

Dear Anon/Lolo,
The real stuff does 'stick'! The eglu has a poop tray that pulls out from the back. All I have to do is walk it to the compost bin and sprinkle on some dirt. New compost bins made of hay bales 2 high, old windows covering the composting stuff in the middle of the square. Chick poop very hot...gonna be great, fast compost cooking!
